Communicative competence

Have you ever been asked about what communicative competence means? In fact, it looks like an easy question but it becomes quite complicated and confusing when it comes to a definition.
It is quite ironic because it is an important factor inside a language classroom. Still, I conducted a research with some classmates and we found out that a lot of experienced language teachers did not know to define it.
